Learn how to use AccessKit to support multilingual experiences.
AccessKit supports multilingual experiences by allowing you to upload multiple caption tracks for a single Work. This is useful if you want to provide captions in different languages for your guests. If you only have a single caption track, you can still support multilingual experiences by using automated caption translation.
Because creating caption tracks can be a time-consuming process even without translation, a common pattern is to use the original audio track and an automatic translation of the captions as a starting point for a professional translator or interpreter to review and finalize, as this makes it much simpler to work with any professional translator or interpreter even if they are not familiar with captioning, as AccessKit carefully preserves the timestamps and structure of the original caption track.
Adding multiple caption tracks
If you already have multiple caption tracks, you can follow the standard guide for adding captions to a Work, with one small change. After you have uploaded your first caption track, simply click the Add Additional Captions button again to bring up additional form fields where you can upload further caption tracks.
Language codes
Be sure to set the Language Display Code for each caption track. This is a
short code (e.g. EN, FR, ES, etc.) that will be used to identify the
language of the caption track in the guest-facing interface.
Automated caption translation
If you do not have multiple caption tracks, or you want to provide another language that is not in the list of caption tracks, you can use our automated caption translation feature, which uses AI and machine learning to automatically translate your caption track.
Select target languages
Select the target languages from the available languages in the
Automatic Translation Languages section. Multiple languages can be selected using ctrl-/cmd-
or shift-clicking.
The first caption track in the list of uploaded captions will be used as the source for automatic translation.
Click Update Work
Click the Update Work button at the bottom of the page.
The new caption track will be automatically generated and added to the work with the appropriate language code.
Reviewing translations
In general, we recommend reviewing your translations to ensure they are accurate and appropriately reflect the tone, style, and artistic intent of the original caption track.
For captions with informal or irregular language or stylization, such as "textspeak" or "leetspeak," be sure to carefully review your translated text. You may need to manually redress language that is not immediately recognizable to the translation tool.
